The Next Generation of Printers

Printing News MagazineMay 16, 2005—With students present from all five boroughs of New York City, the fourth annual Graphic Communication Arts Citywide Competition, April 22, at the New York City College of Technology (CUNY) in Brooklyn, was a resounding success. Seven local high schools participated, and 35 students competed in four categories: digital photography; offset printing; desktop publishing; and Internet Web page design.

Each winner received two trophies; one to keep and one to be displayed in his or her school. Additionally, with the exception of the third-place offset printing students who received a savings bond, each third-place winner received a CD walkman; second-place winners received a boom box, and first-place winners received iPods. The first-place winner in the desktop publishing competition also received a free course offered by the education department of the Association of Graphic Communications. Quark provided each participating school with a copy of QuarkXPress.

“Educational institutions are important to Quark,” said Shellie Hall, product marketing specialist, Quark. “I was thrilled to be one of the judges in this high school graphic arts competition. These students have worked incredibly hard and done a tremendous job.”

In offset printing, first place was awarded to Steven Rivera and Gabriel Espinal from Bushwick High School; second place went to Jessica Robinson and Cynthia Perez, also from Bushwick High School; and third-place winners were Daron Perrier and Nolan Smith from the High School of Graphic Communication Arts.
